Yogiños: Yoga for Youth® Adult Training

NEW: Yogiños: Yoga for Youth® has applied to become an official yoga school. Our application is pending, but once it goes through, the trainings you take with us (including past trainings) can be applied toward the 95 hour Registered Children's Yoga Teacher (RCYT) credential. We have created 4 training modules that can be taken in any order that together equal the 95 hours for RCYT status.


About Adult Training

~You do not need to already be a yoga teacher.
~Trainings are beneficial for parents, educators, yoga and fitness instructors, and anyone who works with kids and families.
~Yogiños: Yoga for Youth® trainings can be counted toward Yoga Alliance's requirements for Continuing Education.

Module 1: Introduction to Yogiños: Yoga for Youth®:
  • Introduction to the theories and practices that serve as our foundation of teaching yoga to families and youth of all ages in a variety of settings;
  • Weekend of transformational demonstrations, discussions and activities with your friends, colleagues, and Yogiños Leaders;
  • Interactive experiences facilitating and demonstrating team-building, cooperation, antibullying and tolerance;
  • Information and opportunities about starting your own kids yoga business;
  • Yogiños: Yoga for Youth® Curriculum eManual with educational and yoga philosophies, trilingual charts, class ideas, basic pose lists, instructions and information designed specifically for youth of all abilities and needs;
  • A to Z Bilingual eBook of Poses;
  • Yogiños: Yoga for Youth® award-winning DVD, The Story of Ganesha;
  • Wholesale discounts on our t-shirts, music CDs, posters, books, and stamps before and during the weekend session;

    As a result of this program, we believe participants will be able to:
  • Conceive, design and teach an OHMazing™ theme-based Yogiños: Yoga for Youth® kids yoga class
  • Practice and teach all 8 Limbs of Yoga, including poses (asana) and breathing (pranayama)
  • Understand and use age-appropriate and safe forms of yoga, including games and related activities, to engage kids physically, emotionally, and mentally
  • Modify lessons for various audiences and age groups
  • Learn, practice and weave multiple languages and intelligences into your yoga for kids class
  • Use yoga for kids as a means to teach tools and technqiues to empower audiences to respond mindfully rather than react irrationally

    Module 2:
    Every Kid's Yoga: Teaching Yoga to Children with Special Needs
    :
    Discover the many ways that yoga can promote the healthy development of children, ages 4-12.  Find out how the practice of yoga parallels and supports other therapeutic modalities in addressing difficulties with attention, self-regulation, speech and language, learning, and high and low muscle tone. This experiential workshop will provide a strong foundation to teaching yoga to children with the following special needs:
    • Those who are easily over-stimulated
    • Those who are potentially impulsive and/or distractible
    • Those who exhibit poor social skills and boundaries
    • Those who are learning disabled/with an emphasis on speech and language based learning disabilities
    • Those who are potentially oppositional and/or disruptive
    • Those who present with high or low muscle tone

    Diagnoses to include:
    • High Functioning Autism/ Asperger s Syndrome
    • Sensory Processing Dysfunction (SPD)
    • Learning Disabled (LD)
    • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
    • Mild Cerebral Palsy

    The primary focus of this training will be upon working with groups of higher functioning children with special needs, who are essentially physically able. This training will not address working with severely physically, developmentally, cognitively, or emotionally challenged children. Basic information will be provided throughout the training to assist participants in understanding the needs and challenges of the population outlined above. Professional therapists may benefit from this training by learning creative, developmentally appropriate, fun ways of engaging and supporting children with special needs in the practice of yoga. This program is appropriate for Yoga teachers and parents, teachers and therapists with a personal yoga practice who are interested in incorporating yoga into their work with children.  

    As a result of taking this program, program participants will be able to:
    • Structure a class for potentially impulsive children using behavior management and limit-setting techniques
    • Modify postures for this population
    • Teach breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation to children
    • Integrate props, chanting, Thai Yoga Massage and partner yoga
    • Employ visuals for children with language-based learning disabilities
    • Use yoga to support speech and language, sensory processing, memory, and reading comprehension.

Module 3: Yoga, Art and Music:

  • Introduction to the theories and practices associated with teaching yoga to youth in more less-formal educational settings including museums and festivals;
  • Discuss characteristics of how the intersections of yoga, art and music are meaningful for our bodies, hearts and minds;
  • Use music and art as catalysts for designing and implementing yoga classes;
  • Make art and music in relation to a theme-based class;
  • Presentations and discussion of current research and programs associated with yoga, art and music;
  • Weekend of transformational, interdisciplinary activities with live musicians and original works of art with your friends, colleagues, and Yogiños Leaders;
  • Tips and techniques for starting your own yoga for youth program in museums, festivals and related spaces;
  • If this is your first module: Yogiños: Yoga for Youth® Curriculum eManual, A to Z Bilingual eBook of Poses, the award-winning DVD, The Story of Ganesha;

    • Construct and teach kids yoga classes that include creative and expressive art- and music-making
    • Create and teach activities to center, relax or rejuvenate learners in a various environments;
    • Practice and teach all 8 Limbs of Yoga, including poses (asana) and breathing (pranayama);
    • Understand and use age-appropriate and safe forms of yoga, including games and related activities, to engage kids physically, emotionally, and mentally;
    • Modify lessons for various audiences and age groups;
    • Modify lessons for various audiences designed for less formal learning (ie, museums and festivas) environments;
    • Learn, practice and weave multiple languages and intelligences into your yoga for kids class;
    • Use yoga for kids as a means to teach tools and technqiues to empower audiences to respond mindfully rather than react irrationally.

 

Module 4: Yoga in Schools: Mindfulness and Movement Across the Curriculum:

  • Introduction to the theories and practices associated with teaching yoga to youth in more formal educational settings including schools;
  • Discuss characteristcis and how to "diagnose" when youth need tools to better regulate their bodies, hearts and minds;
  • Presentation and discussion of current research and programs in schools;
  • Weekend of transformational, interdisciplinary activities with your friends, colleagues, and Yogiños Leaders;
  • Interactive experiences especially suitable for classrooms and schools, demonstrating skills to improve academic achievement as well as increase abilities to handle related stress including bullying and tolerance;
  • Tips and techniques for starting your own yoga for youth program in schools;
  • If this is your first module: Yogiños: Yoga for Youth® Curriculum eManual, A to Z Bilingual eBook of Poses, the award-winning DVD, The Story of Ganesha;

Become a Yogiños: Yoga for Youth Inspired Instructor:

  • Complete a Teacher Training weekend
  • Create Yogiños-based curriculum for 8 week program
  • Teach a minimum of 4 classes with self-evaluation
  • Submit and receive approval of a teaching video that demonstrates foundational elements of Yogiños: Yoga for Youth®

Become a Yogiños: Yoga for Youth Certified Instructor:
  • All of the above plus minimum 200-level yoga training certification
